First year in teaching

Part 1 of 3:
Introduction
Everyone says that your school days are the best of your life. Whether you agreed with this when you were sitting in the library revising for an exam on a Friday afternoon or running cross-country in a blizzard, you obviously liked the place because you’re going back!

You’re beginning an inspiring and rewarding career where no two days are the same - and these are probably some of the reasons you chose to teach in the first place.

As a new teacher, you will be faced with challenges unique to the environment you are working in, where there are social as well as professional dynamics to consider. Some of these challenges cannot always be predicted and so the experience of every trainee and NQT will be different.

We hope this information will help you through this exciting and challenging time and equip you with the skills and knowledge to cope with the wonderful world of teaching!

If you are looking for something in particular just click one the link below to take you straight there!

As well as the information you will find in the following ‘comprehensive guide to’ we also have a ‘Starting out Guide’ for trainee and new teachers. This can be ordered for free online [link to order page], or downloaded here.

Social Networking
Teacher Support Network has recently launched a Meetup project to bring teachers together in a comfortable environment to discuss life, teaching, learn from one another and coordinate ways to promote better wellbeing for teachers in their own schools. The project currently has a London group which is continuing to grow. Join us now and have the opportunity to attend, organise and influence our next meeting.

We also have a Facebook page a discussion group and an application with over 100 members and growing. Why not check out our profile page, become a fan or share the page with other teachers you know. The discussion group is a great way to chat to other teachers, exchange ideas and advice and keep up-to-date with Teacher Support Network news and campaigns. Add our application and get access to links to our InfoCentre from inside Facebook.

If you are already a member of Facebook take a look at our Factsheet ‘Facebook – privacy settings’ which has advice on how to control who can see your information and how to set-up your own page for your class.

Wheel of Wellbeing
If you need further support or need to talk to someone you can call our confidential support line on 08000 562 561 (England) or 08000 855 088 (Wales).

We are also developing 8 tailored coaching programmes to meet your individual needs. Just fill out our Wheel of Wellbeing to find out which one would be best for you.
