The Steve Sinnott Foundation21 September 2011
Steve Sinnott, the NUT General Secretary who died suddenly in 2008, was well known amongst teachers' organisations worldwide for his passionate support of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for education, that every child in the world must have access to basic education by 2015. Now the charitable foundation named after him continues his work by uniting teachers, educators, charity workers and activists in the worldwide movement to achieve this goal. The Steve Sinnott Foundation has established a unique worldwide online community of teachers and educators through which education project organisers in the developing world can share their needs for help and support. We are also adopting and promoting our own projects; the first in West Nepal where we have enabled 400 children from some of the poorest families to gain access to quality education through the development of four schools. In partnership with Manisha Child Welfare Foundation Nepal, a local organisation, we have helped construct one new school building and refurbish three, we have equipped classrooms with essential resources, books and teaching material, we have helped recruit qualified and trained teachers and provide afternoon meals, clean drinking water, medical aid and toilets at all the schools. We have established eight partnerships between schools in Nepal and the UK, promoting diversity and global citizenship as well as supporting key areas of teaching and learning on both sides. This year, we have developed a training and professional development programme for teachers in Sierra Leone, in partnership with EducAid, a local Sierra Leonean organisation. The first phase of the programme will be taking place in London in October - November 2011, followed by several sessions in Sierra Leone where we are helping EducAid to develop a residential training facility for teachers. The training aims to benefit hundreds of teachers and in turn, thousands of children in Sierra Leone. Along with expanding our initiatives in Nepal & Sierra Leone, we also seek to connect the projects on our website with networks of supporters and volunteers in the UK and worldwide. We are also keen to involve a growing number of schools and teachers in the UK with our international initiatives. We publish ENGAGE, a twice yearly magazine reporting on our activities and raising awareness about education for all.
