Your donations help teachers in more ways than you may be awareLast winter, when a retired Geography teacher's heating system broke down Teacher Support Network made sure he didn't suffer the same fate.2 December 2010
By Julian Stanley Teacher Support Network Chief Executive I want to tell you about Geoff*. Geoff is a retired Geography teacher with 25 years of service. This time last year, Geoff’s wife Valerie had a heart attack and had to spend a lot of time in hospital. Luckily, Valerie made quick progress, but when it was time for Valerie to return home, Geoff discovered that the central heating system had completely broken down. As you probably remember, last winter was the coldest for many years, so Geoff was forced to keep the house warm with electric heaters as Valerie continued her recovery. A few weeks later, the electricity bill arrived and Geoff was distraught. As pensioners, there was no way he and Valerie could afford to pay such a large bill and buy a brand new boiler too. Like many others before him, Geoff called Teacher Support Network for help. Our trained advisors were able to offer Geoff support and advice and suggested that he apply for a one-off grant. On this occasion, we were able to give Geoff £2,000 to replace his boiler and I’m delighted to say life is getting back to normal for Geoff and Valerie. Teacher Support Network (formerly Teachers’ Benevolent Fund) has been providing grants for over one hundred years. A donation from you today means we can continue to help more serving, unemployed and retired teachers like Geoff, who turn to us when no-one else can help. Requests for grants have never been higher and with your help we can restore dignity to colleagues like Geoff. A one-off donation of £25 (or any amount you can afford) will go directly to our grants fund and is guaranteed not to be spent on overheads, but on helping other teachers like Geoff. Please donate on-line today by clicking here now! There are many ways to help keep our services open: Make a one-time donation; leave a Gift in your Will; donate by direct debit; or donate through your salary. Thank you on behalf of Geoff and everyone who has turned to Teacher Support Network for help. Sincerely, Julian Stanley Chief Executive
