Event reveals serious concerns about new school buildings

Only 12 per cent of teachers considered their school building to provide an effective learning environment

8 July 2008

Last week Teacher Support Network, in partnership with the British Council for School Environments (BCSE), held a roundtable event bringing together key stakeholders including teaching unions, architects, and the DCSF, to discuss the relationship between teacher wellbeing and the school environment.

A joint survey of teachers held last year revealed that only 12 per cent of respondents considered the design of their school building to provide an effective learning environment. In addition issues such as acoustics, temperature control and security arrangements were found to have a negative impact on teacher wellbeing.

Following the roundtable Teacher Support Network and BSCE have made a joint submission to the Children, Schools and Families Select Committee highlighting the need for greater teacher involvement in the Building Schools for the future procurement process.
