GCSE Results 2010by Jason Harrison : 24 August 2010
It is another record year for GCSE results, but there could still be bad news for some students. The lack of university places could cause a domino effect forcing many lower achieving students out of further education altogether, warns the University and College Union (UCU). Many of those who traditionally have turned to vocational qualifications are losing out to better performing students, who themselves failed to get into university. This could lead to a rise in the number of Neets or young people not in education, employment or training, the Guardian reports. Meanwhile the National Union of Teachers (NUT) said students should be proud of their GCSEs. "For those who criticise the GCSE they should reflect on the negative impact that criticism has on the morale and confidence of young people" said Christine Blower, General Secretary of the National Union of Teachers. "While there are strong arguments for reviewing the overall examination system, as Tomlinson did, GCSEs as they stand represent both rigour and quality and young people can be proud of the grades they have achieved."
