Spirit measureIncreasing number of teachers turning to alcohol after a stressful day in the classroomBy Lucy Rowe : 9 June 2009
Teacher Support Network have been quoted in a Times Educational Supplement (TES) about teachers and alcohol abuse. The article, published in June, discussed the increasing trend of teachers turning to alcohol after a stressful day in the classroom. The article cited a new survey for the Government's ‘Know Your Limits' campaign that found nearly six out of 10 education workers have turned to alcohol to relieve stress after work. The survey also found that 20 per cent of the sector's drinkers were keen to cut down on their alcohol intake. Teacher Support Network Chief Executive, Julian Stanley was quoted as saying: “Every year we come across teachers who have turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. Far too many teachers are experiencing difficult emotional challenges at work because of the pressures heaped upon them. Reducing this pressure is vital to helping teachers avoid the pitfalls of alcohol”.
