Julian Stanley's comments on Ofsted's annual report - press response23 November 2011
Further to Ofsted's annual report that 'nearly a third of schools are not good enough', Julian Stanley, Group Chief Executive of Teacher Support Network comments: "Whilst poor performance is not acceptable, it is not helpful to label teachers in this way without a more nuanced understanding of the context in which they operate. We should examine if sufficient help, training and guidance is available to teachers, schools and their leadership teams to assist staff in dealing with an ever changing curriculum, difficult classroom situations and in managing poor behaviour. Facing the chalk face on a daily basis can be thrilling and rewarding as a teacher. That said, it can also be stressful and very demanding in ways that few other professions face. Merely criticising teachers and leaders without offering them support and incentives to improve, develop, communicate and manage complex situations will not help the situation."
