Unrealistic goals and standards make teachers stressed

2 September 2010—Teachers who want to be happier should not try to please everyone and should have a greater say in setting targets, a new survey has revealed. Figures released from the University of Kent, in association with Teacher Support Network, show that teachers with career aspirations and a goal to learn were happier than those facing unrealistic expectations. 31 August 2010—The leader of Scotland's largest council is writing to Michael Russell the education secretary, asking him to reopen the 'McCrone deal' after plans to force teachers to work longer hours in the classroom were unveiled. Continue Reading

Fife to 'stress proof' schools

28 August 2010—Fife Council plans to ‘stress proof’ all of its schools with an authority-wide audit of teacher and staff wellbeing. Nearly 300 schools will take the online StaffWise survey to analyse the way in which employees view their working environment, with the first school beginning the process tomorrow (Monday). School leaders will then identify areas for improvement and use the results to help improve staff morale. Continue Reading

NQTs job prospects under threat

25 August 2010—Hopes that NQTs could find jobs with different councils from the ones where they trained were dashed this week with the release of new figures. Just 87 probationers secured a job outside their own council authority out of over 3,000, while only 360 new staff obtained permanent posts. 489 secured temporary posts. Continue Reading
