Education Secretary to hold public events on Curriculum for Excellence

by Helen McClymont

Michael Russell, the education secretary for Scotland, has organised a series of public events to give parents and teachers the chance to put their questions directly to him on the controversial Curriculum for Excellence (CfE).

"I firmly believe Scotland has a great system of education, with many, many good schools, teachers and pupils" said Mr. Russell on the Engage for Education website. "Curriculum for Excellence is all about building on the strengths of the system and making sure all pupils have the skills they need for the jobs of the future."

Events will be held at a number of venues throughout August, with more dates set to be announced over the coming year.

"There is always room for improvement and I believe listening to the views of others who care about education is an important part of finding out what more can be done" explained Mr. Russell. "I hope the people of Scotland will grab this opportunity to engage in genuine dialogue with the Scottish Government."

There has been extensive criticism over the introduction of the CfE, with both the Scottish Secondary Teachers Association (SSTA) and the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) considering industrial action.

The events will be held at the following venues

Inverurie Academy, Aberdeenshire 10 August 2010 (7:30pm-9:30pm)

Lornshill Academy, Alloa 26 August 2010 (7:30pm-9:30pm)

Balivanich School, Benbecula 31 August 2010 (6:30pm-8:30pm)
