Here’s her story…

I always wanted to be a Modern Studies teacher. My teacher always made the lessons interesting and she genuinely cared about her pupils.

My teaching placements were quite difficult. At times I felt that no strategy was working for me and seriously questioned if I had chosen the right career. However, I was in a really supportive department. One teacher spent a lot of time observing me and giving constructive feedback. By the end, I was really sad to leave. Supportive colleagues who don't judge you are essential. I always try to remember my experience when students come on placements now.

The main thing which is great about teaching is that every day really is different. There are times in the year where it can be stressful and the curriculum changes at the moment are causing anxiety for many teachers. However, I think it is important to continue to challenge myself and always try new techniques in the classroom. Talking to other teachers always helps. I think everyone has one teacher that they feel had an influence in their life and the real satisfaction comes when you feel you have been that person.

At times I think it would be useful to have some advice from someone not connected to the school, like Teacher Support Scotland. Even if it was someone who could just listen to you and help you de-stress.
