VIOLENCE IN SCOTTISH SCHOOLS

Pupil aggression towards teachers is not a new phenomenon. Nevertheless, it is perceived as a rising problem, particularly amongst experienced teachers.

In addition, we know that it is not just pupils who can be aggressive in schools. Unfortunately a small but significant number of teachers also experience such behaviour from colleagues.

If you've just survived yet another disrupted class or had to deal with the same persistently abusive person, you may be feeling frustrated by the detrimental effects this kind of behaviour can have on the rest of the class as well as being concerned for your own health and wellbeing.

Here are six things you can do if you are feeling physically threatened:

• If a colleague or pupil is being aggressive to you, do not respond in kind as this may escalate the situation. Respond slowly, calmly and gently. Breathe slowly to control tension or anxiety within yourself.
• Ensure you have access to the exit, in case you need to get away quickly.
• Be aware of your body language, making sure you don't come across as intimidating. Threatening gestures can include looking down on the person, folding your arms, having your hands on your hips or raising your arms.
• Try to offer the person a way out. You could suggest going for a walk, or finding a colleague to mediate. Allow the person to divert their aggression to inanimate objects such as hitting a table.
• Make sure you report the event after it has ended and ensure that the investigative process is fair to you.
• If you can't contain the situation, make a move and get away.
