Carer for elderly disabled mother
Anne (not her real name) is a single 53 year old woman and has served as a teacher for 30 years. She now works part time and is the main carer for her disabled elderly mother.
Anne contacted the Teacher Support Network Grants and Loans Department to request financial assistance for storage heater installation and utility bills. Teacher Support Network’s Money Advisor contacted Anne to advise on benefits but discovered that unfortunately her income is too great and therefore she is not eligible for carers allowance. She has savings of £5,000 and her debt is nominal but there is a small shortfall in her weekly income and expenditure. Anne had applied to other charities for assistance and prior to our decision being made, advised us that she had been successful in one application and another charity had paid for the installation of her storage heater. Due to the client’s circumstances Teacher Support Network’s Grants and Loans Department decided to award a one-off grant of £500 for electricity and council tax. As the Christmas period arrived we received a handmade card from the client’s mother thanking us for supporting her in her time of need.
